Harriet Hubbard Ayer make up compact

Look what I found at an antique store! A compact make up case that perfectly suits the powdered foundation I’ve been wearing. Life without packaging can pose some practicality challenges… I’ve been getting powder ERRYWHERE!

This little 1940s Harriet Hubbard Ayer case is designed to be refilled with a light powder that won’t spill everywhere when you open it. It’s the perfect design for me. I’ve cleaned it up (slide 2) and discovered that (sorry vegans) the applicator is made of hide! I love that it’s incredible quality and made to last. I promise to continue using so this animal skin can keep on keeping on.

It’s interesting learning about the maker. Harriet Hubbard Ayer was a proto-feminist, an entrepreneur, a journalist; and by today’s standards, a fucking badass. She was put into an insane asylum while fighting for custody of her children and reacting to the behaviour of her promiscuous husband. Later in life, she wrote articles that exposed the awful treatment of patients at asylums. She paved the way for female entrepreneurs in the beauty industry like @esteelauder & @elizabetharden.

Such a great find. I will treasure this. 💚
